The Free University of Berlin
The Free University of Berlin is considered to be the largest one within all the other universities located in Berlin. The research work of the university is aimed on the research in the fields of health, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
In 2007, the university was awarded a quite honorable status of the “elite university” this status was given by the German Science Foundation.
If speaking about the campus of the Free University of Berlin, one should mention that almost all the facilities are situated in Dahlem District. The first completed structure of the campus, an independent one, was the Henry Fold Building. This building was funded by the American Ford Foundation. Before the construction of the building, the university was placed in the old buildings, such as Otto Hahn Building.
Nowadays, the complex of university buildings – Rostlaube und Silberlaube is considered to be the largest construction within the Free University of Berlin.
The Free University of Berlin was established in 1948, by the staff and students who were expelled from the Humboldt University of Berlin due to their political persuasions.
In present times, the university has 12 departments and 3 interdisciplinary institutes.
